Named for the Northern Lights that can often be seen dancing in the sky, this is Minnesota's northernmost byway. This breathtaking route traverses 191 miles along Minnesota Trunk Highway 11 through lakes, the legendary Rainy River, forests, farmland, and several cities and small towns.

At the eastern end of this route is Voyageurs National Park, a series of near-wilderness lakes best explored by boat. Excursion boat trips take in points of interest, and there are boat ramps for those who trailer their own. Be sure to check out the fabulous factory tour at Boise Cascade.

The Voyageur's lakes, Rainy River and Lake of the Woods are all terrific fishing waters. A great way to get out on the big lake is to take one of the fishing launches offered by area resorts.

Sports fans will enjoy the Bronko Nagurski Museum in International Falls, dedicated to this hometown hero. Hockey-town USA, Warroad, is home to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Marvin Windows and Doors, and 7 Clans Casino.

A glimpse into the ancient history of the area is found at Grand Mound, the state's largest Indian burial mound. There are many museums and historical sites along the route.

In Baudette, the giant Willie Walleye statue greets visitors, and north of town, Zippel Bay State Park has a 3-mile long beach on Lake of the Woods. Warroad is also set on the shore of this mammoth lake.

Roseau is home to Polaris snowmobiles, and is the turn off for the secluded Hayes Lake State Park. In June, Lady Slippers bloom along the Minnesota State Wildflower Route connecting all these towns.

The stretch from Warroad to Karlstad is part of the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail, with several nearby bird-watching sites. Lake Bronson State Park is a great place to see moose and other wildlife. The scenic byway is then completed by going north on 59 to Lake Bronson State Park and then west on 175 West to Hallock, the beautiful Red River Valley (farming country), and then on to the ND border.
